Quick answer

The current Front Range is a padded everyday walking harness with four adjustment points and two leash connections. Choose size by rib-cage girth, then confirm shoulder freedom, elbow clearance, stability, and reverse-escape resistance on the individual dog.

Limits and unresolved questions

  • The official page provides no independent crash-restraint certification; this is an everyday walking harness record, not a vehicle-safety recommendation.
  • Pawpry has not performed hands-on pull, abrasion, escape, wet-use, or long-duration comfort testing.
  • A girth range does not establish neck-opening fit, shoulder freedom, or escape resistance for a particular body shape.
  • The front connection is reinforced webbing, not the aluminum V-ring used on the back; the page does not provide separate load ratings for either point.
  • Colors, material percentages, and V-ring finish can change; verify the product page and label at purchase.

What this audit covers

This page reviews the current product information published under the Front Range name and the official adjustment instructions checked on the date above. It is not a hands-on review. It does not transfer facts from older generations, retailer listings, similar Ruffwear harnesses, or customer reviews into the current record.

Choose the chart size

Ruffwear sizes the Front Range by girth around the widest part of the rib cage and says to choose the larger size when between sizes. Measure with a soft tape kept level and close to the coat without compressing the dog. Repeat the number, record the unit, and compare the unrounded value with the chart.

The chart choice only establishes a candidate. A dog at the edge of a range may have little adjustment margin, and two dogs with the same girth can have different neck, chest depth, shoulder, and coat shapes. If the opening, panel position, or strap path cannot be made correct within the candidate size, the chart has not produced a usable fit.

Adjustment sequence and on-dog checks

The official adjustment PDF identifies two shoulder straps and two girth straps. Extending them before fitting creates room to place the harness and then tighten symmetrically. After adjustment, inspect the following in a secure area:

  1. The chest panel is centered and the front does not press on the throat.
  2. The shoulder straps allow the front legs to reach forward and outward.
  3. The girth straps remain on the rib cage, away from the armpits and soft abdomen.
  4. The body stays centered during turns and tension from the intended leash point.
  5. Gentle backward pressure cannot draw the opening over the shoulders or head.

Use the manufacturer instructions as the product-specific starting point and the Pawpry harness measuring guide for movement and stop-use checks. Recheck after growth, weight change, coat change, or washing.

Understand the two leash connections

The rear connection is an aluminum V-ring. The front connection is reinforced nylon webbing with a TPU tube. They are different constructions. The manufacturer describes the rear as the everyday walking point and the front as an option to redirect a dog that pulls. That marketing description does not make the harness a training method or prove a load rating.

If the front point pulls the body panel sideways, shortens the stride, or causes rubbing, stop and reassess the fit, handling method, and design. Use reward-based loose-leash training rather than relying on leverage alone.

Materials and care implications

The documented shell, lining, foam, webbing, buckles, and attachment materials help identify the current generation. Hand washing with mild detergent and air drying are the official care instructions. After washing, allow the padding and lining to dry completely, then inspect stitching, webbing edges, buckles, adjustment movement, and connection points before use.

Who should look elsewhere

Look for another solution if the dog can reverse out; if the front shape crosses the shoulder; if the girth strap cannot clear the elbows; if the dog requires a dedicated escape-resistant third strap; or if the task is vehicle restraint, load-bearing work, lifting, or another use not established by the official page. A popular everyday harness does not become a universal-purpose safety device.

Stop use for damaged hardware, slipping adjustment, broken stitching, chafing, hair loss, restricted gait, coughing, panic, or a successful escape. Contact Ruffwear for model-specific questions that the current documentation does not answer.
